Foxfire Way by Summer O. Lee

Michael's Review:
This is a short, hot piece that will have you wiping the sweat from your brow, not just from the sex but from the lush descriptions that perfectly capture the lazy, sweltering days of Southern summers. For a short piece, there are a couple of nice twists.

Demonic Cravings Series by Elizabeth J. Kolodziej

Michael's Synopsis:
Ambitious demon Sultras is asked by major demon Malachi to watch over his half-demon daughter Kasidy. But the politics of Hell and Sultras’ growing attraction to Kasidy complicate the job as Kasidy comes to embrace who she really is.

In Demon Protection Plan, told from Kasidy’s viewpoint, we learn how she has avoided connections with humans because of her unique background. But her isolation ends when she’s caught up in a criminal investigation and assigned to protective custody. She and Decland Kerrigan, a cop with secrets of his own, must hide out until the trial begins. But naturally nothing goes according to plan.

Michael's Review:
I enjoyed both of these stories, and the author did a good job of giving making Sultras and Kasidy sympathetic without making them into something that—being demon and part-demon—they should not be. The sex, naturally, is red-hot. I do wish they had the attention of a better editor, but the errors weren’t pervasive enough to distract from the story.

This is a nice piece with some clever twists and turns that I did not see coming. Once Nancy is drawn out of her shell, the sex comes hot and heavy, and both she and Ari get a lot more than they bargained for. Worth the read.

Dick Midnight vs Osiris by Dick Midnight

Michael's Synopsis:
As the great Paul “Bear” Bryant said, “It’s not bragging if it’s true.” Dick Midnight does not brag, nor does he need to. A taciturn but dashing author/adventurer/paranormal investigator (Think Daniel Craig’s 007 crossed with Indiana Jones, with a dash of Ernest Hemingway), Dick Midnight goes where others dare not and solves the unsolvable while maintaining his perfectly unflappable mien.

In this piece, oversexed Egyptologist Chavi Shehata mixes business and pleasure a bit too thoroughly and gets herself pulled into the Nether Realms by none other than Osiris, the Egyptian god of the dead, to become his eternal sex slave. Her colleague must enlist Dick Midnight’s help in rescuing her, though it’s not precisely clear she wants to be rescued.

Michael's Review:
If all of this sounds a bit tongue in cheek, it’s not. It’s tongue-perfectly-in-cheek. This is an entertaining yarn that never takes itself too seriously. As soon as I get done with this review, I”m going off in search of Dick Midnight’s other adventures.

Author Interview:
Can you describe your book in one sentence?
DM: Dick Midnight is hired to rescued an Egyptian archaeology professor who has come face to face, or face to pronounced loin, with the God Osiris.

What makes your book so different from all the books out there?
Much of the excellent material from numerous myth/monster erotica authors places the key relationship between the mythological creature/monster and abducted prey. The Dick Midnight approach incorporates another dynamic: he is author and warrior. It's not unlike the Castle or Jessica Fletcher or Ellery Queen concept of mystery writing, where the author also solves the crime. Dick Midnight is the author, but he's also a driving force in the stories. Combine Castle with Ash from Evil Dead and the brooding anti-heroes from samurai and spaghetti western lore, and we might be getting to the waterline as we delve deeper into the iceberg that is his character.

In addition to that, The Nether Regions. By uncovering a world not bound by our physical perceptions of reality, populated with an endless stream of mythological entities, one can stretch the limits of the imagination. The Nether Regions is a critical backdrop to the Dick Midnight stories. Nothing is off limits. Anything is possible. This allows for unending opportunities to explore the realms deep within the recesses of our minds.

How did you bring life to your characters?
DM: Dick Midnight lives the adventures. During the writing process, Dick Midnight has a way of interpreting the mental state of the characters in his tales.

For those who might consider reading your book, what would you tell them to expect?
A warning. The creatures are out there. Beyond that, hopefully acceptable prose, good action, descriptive sex and the occasional satirical cultural observation. And tits. Almost certainly tits. Although that would likely be included under the descriptive sex portion, so apologies for the digression.

What does your writing area look like?
Cleanliness is not a Dick Midnight virtue. On this front, he is about as far from Godliness as one can be. Although, since he doesn't write in a particular space and finds time to put fingers to keyboard in locations dependent upon the cases, I guess cleanliness varies. He could be alone in a penthouse apartment overlooking the Caspian Sea or on the plains of the Kalahari Desert. In situations such as those, cleanliness becomes a rather subjective concept.

Your favorite quotes –
"You can say so much about so many things so often, but if you do you'll be saying nothing about anything all the time." Former NBA player, and now the late Edgar Jones, said that to a reporter 30 years ago as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. Dick Midnight finds it apropos.

"He also likes this one: 'When it comes to the creatures of our mythology, he already knows their names. Now he's here to kick their ass." That's me, referring to Dick Midnight in an entirely different tense, for the purposes of promotion.

What is your favorite thing about being an Indie writer?
This is all on you. Are you willing to write the material, without worrying about publishing house gatekeepers denying entry into the old-guard book distribution model? It's a great opportunity to see a project to completion, and then see how it will be received and what happens from there.

Your thoughts on receiving book reviews - the good and the bad -
Anything and everything is beneficial. If you put a product out there, you have to be able to deal with the reality that someone who takes the time to read it won't like it. That can be every bit as informative as the perspective of those who do. The more eyes on the product, the better.

How do you market your work? What avenues have you found to work best for erotica?
That is very much a work in progress, and I'm honored that Christina Harding has provided a forum for the purpose of commentary and assisting in getting the word out. Beyond that, Dick Midnight is in the process of pursuing other avenues, but is extremely interesting in discovering what approaches have been especially effective for other writers. Will you have a new book coming out soon? Can you tell us about it?
Yes. There are many other stories in the works, and others already completed, including Dick Midnight vs The Minotaur and Dick Midnight vs Hafgufa (The Kraken). Blood Drive by Lane Hart

Michael's Synopsis:
Sam is a good-natured vampire working at the local blood bank. Kate is a virginal college freshman with a murky past. When Sam draws Kate’s blood during a blood drive, he discovers that—unknown to her or anyone else—she’s a witch. This is a problem because of the government agency that’s tasked with hunting down and executing paranormal creatures like the two of them. Sam and Kate hit it off but must balance their budding attraction against the complications of their backgrounds. Also, Sam has a cat (which matters, you’ll see).

Michael's Review:
If this sounds a bit like a Twilight knockoff, it is in some ways, but I still found it enjoyable. Sam and Kate are interesting, likable people, and I wanted to see what happened to them. There’s a lot of hot sex and some nice twists and turns in the plot, which starts slow but builds in a satisfying way as the story goes on.

Excerpt:
"The way his eyes roamed down my body, I was pretty sure he was checking me out. With that little bit of confidence it was now or never if I wanted to see or talk to him again. The chance of rejection was worth risking because I was so tired of being lonely, and he was so gorgeous.

“Could I maybe call you if I have any more questions?” I asked hesitantly.

His mouth dropped open. “Hell yes. I mean yeah, sure. Please call me,” he stuttered in what seemed like maybe surprise, making me sigh in relief.

I pulled my phone from my pocket to quickly put his name in my contacts before he changed his mind. All I knew was that his first name was Sam.

“Um, what’s your last name?” I asked embarrassed.

“West, it’s Sam West,” he said with a sweet smile.

“Okay, what’s your number?” I asked, my fingers hovering over the numbers on the screen waiting.

“Eight, six, seven, five, three oh nine,” he called out. I started putting the numbers in then stopped. Why did that sequence of numbers sound so familiar? Wasn’t it an old song?

“Is that really your number?” I asked as I looked back up at him.

Sam actually laughed out loud. Catching him off guard, he looked like such a happy and carefree guy, and even more adorable. There was something about his eyes that had seemed sad before now, even with the perfect smile he was usually flashing.

“Yes, that's really my number, why? You think I’d give you a fake one?” he asked still grinning as he pushed his long hair out of his eyes.

I was so captivated by the sight of him that I completely forgot what we were talking about again.

“Call it and make sure if you want,” he said when I didn't respond. “I just have horrible taste in music.”

If I called him then he'd have my number in his phone too, without me trying to force it on him like the desperate girl that I was. Not that he’d ever actually call me.

I smiled as I finished entering in the number then hit send.

“Boop boop boop,” what sounded like the Super Mario Brothers theme song blared out from his behind. Without taking his eyes from mine he grabbed his phone from his back pocket and answered it.

“Helllooo? Jenny’s busy right now, but I can give you a good time,” he said referencing the old song with an even deeper and sexier rumble to his normal masculine voice. Oh, and I bet he really could too, I thought blushing again.

I couldn't help but laugh as I ended the call, and if felt so good that I was sad that he was leaving.

“Okay, now I know it’s really your number,” I said as I put my phone back in my jean pocket and tried not to let him see how pathetic I was.

“I hope you’ll call me,” he said so sincerely that my eyes shot back up to his. His ever-present sexy boyish grin was gone, and instead he looked so serious and genuine that I thought I'd melt into a puddle.

“I mean, again. When I’m not standing in front of you,” he amended making my smile widen.

“Well, now you’ve got my number too,” I said as I pushed my hair behind my ear, and glanced back down at my shoes.

He just stood there without saying anything until I looked back up at him.

“Okay, I’ll call you. But just to warn you, I’m going to try and talk you into going on a date with me,” he said with a nervous but hopeful smile.

I'm sure my mouth must have dropped open. He'd said ""date"". This incredibly gorgeous man wanted to go on a real date with me? But I didn't want to have to wait for him to call me, if he ever actually decided to call.

“I’ll answer, and I could probably be convinced,” I finally said with a smile as I turned around and started walking away before I made a bigger fool of myself.

“I hope so. Bye, Kate,” he said.

“Bye, Sam,” I responded, still in shock, as I made my way across the parking lot.

Author Interview:
How did you come up with your title? 
Blood Drive represented where the two main characters in the book, Sam and Kate meet - at a blood drive. Also, it references Sam's need for blood as a vampire, and there's something about Kate's blood that drives the book as well.

Where do you get your ides/inspiration for your writing? 
The idea for Blood Drive actually came from a picture on Twitter of a car parked outside a blood bank with a "Vampyr" license plate. I thought it would be funny to write about a vampire hiding in plain sight and build the other characters and their story around him.

Do you work with an outline, or just write? 
With Blood Drive I used an outline and I think it really helped me stay on track and know exactly where to take the story.

For those who might consider reading your book, what would you tell them to expect? 
Well the characters in Blood Drive all have potty mouths. I did a word count just to see, and the f-bomb was used almost 400 times. I even read back through each of them to see about toning it down but I couldn't. Unfortunately, the characters just aren't the same without the foul language.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why? 
Chapters six and seven were my favorite because that is where Sam and Kate start to relax with each other and form an instant sort of connection. Kate loses here shyness and she starts having a really good time with Sam.

What makes your book so different from all the books out there? 
I think my book has twists that other books don't have. Most of the ones I read either have perfect happy endings or sad endings. After all the drama, Blood Drive ends with a more realistic ending.

Tell us about your writing process. 
When I'm starting a new project, I can go days or weeks barely eating or sleeping as I write. I try to take breaks in between but the stories are always running in my mind.

What was the hardest chapter (or part) to write and why?
The ending was the hardest for me to write. When I got to the end and tried to follow my outline it just didn't work for me. So I thought it over, and from there the story went on for another 100 pages or so in a different and unexpected development.

Can you describe your book in one sentence? 
Blood Drive is a fun and sexy story about a lazy vampire who falls for a beautiful girl, and the asshole who will lie, deceive and betray his only friend to come between the two of them.

Is there a genre you could never write? Which and why? 
I don't think I'll ever write any sci-fi novels because that's just not something I've ever been into.

Michael's Review:
This is a well-written book that I read through in one sitting because I wanted to see how it came out. Jack and Julie are interesting, complex characters that I enjoyed reading about, and the writing is full of vivid, realistic details that added a lot to the story. The sex is well done and original, and unlike some erotic romances I’ve read, doesn’t overpower the story despite the heat (unlike some pieces I’ve read where the story is just there to hold the sex scenes together). Definitely worth the read.

Interview with Bella Chal:
What inspired you to become a writer?
I've always written, but for the last twenty years it's mostly been documentation and reports. I began writing fiction again in December 2012 by tackling a large story I'd always dreamed of writing... and failed utterly. I had completely underestimated how difficult good storytelling can be.

What made you want to write erotica?
Challenged by my failure, I tried writing shorter practice stories to improve my descriptions, dialog, and plotting skills. These stories started off as little erotic vignettes and romantic scenes. As I improved, I tried tying them together in longer serial stories. When I started posting them online, I was happy to discover readers really connected with the stories and characters. That's when I decided to publish one of my stories which became Inseparable.

What does your writing area look like?
My writing area is just a thin silver laptop I take everywhere. I write during lunch and most evenings sitting beside my spouse on our couch. I have two small children at home, so my time is limited, but I've still managed to average about 800 words a day over the last couple of years.

How did you come up with your title?
I didn't, believe it or not! My publisher, Pub Yourself Press, did a fantastic job creating the perfect cover and title for the book. In fact, the whole editing and publishing process was a dream with them.

Do you work with an outline, or just write?
Both, but at different times. Sometimes when I start with a story idea, I need to get in the main characters' heads before I can see where the story should go. Sometimes I write and throw away 30,000 words to get their voices and motivations clear in my mind. Then I jot down the major plot points and character moments in a rough chapter outline. When I start writing, the ideas firm up and I begin to detail out scenes and transitions.

How did you bring life to your characters?
I outline a few key characteristics and motivations to start with for each major point-of-view character. Then I determine where I want the be from and live, then start writing practice scenes where I imagine them interacting. Sometimes these practice scenes make it in the book, but even if I throw them away it helps create a unique voice for them to tell their story.

Do you write under a pen name?
A number of them, actually, but I'll never tell which one is the real me!

What was the best writing advice that someone has ever given to you?
Keep emotional distance from your story and characters. When your editor tells you particular characters, scenes, or chapters need to be cut or rewritten you can do it easier. Falling in love with your own words seems romantic, but the truth is some of my favorite bits only ever worked in my head. On the page they came off completely wrong, so I learned to keep my distance and trust my editor. I think my writing is better for it.

For those who might consider reading your book, what would you tell them to expect?
I write stories about people you could imagine running into at the mall or grocery store. They aren't perfect, or rich, or supernaturally endowed, so for me the trick has been to make the characters relatable and sympathetic. The focus is on romance themes and explicit sex, but it's the character growth throughout the story that I work hardest on.

What is your favorite thing about being an Indie writer?
The writing! I've learned so much telling stories that it's like peeking behind the curtain at the theater when I was little and seeing the sets, lights, and actors. There are so many interesting things I can see authors do with dialog, description, and plots now that I was never aware of before. Storytelling is an art and I'm having the time of my life learning about it!

The Main Attraction: Tiffany Hypnotized by Megan Wyndham

Tiffany, her husband Heath, and a group of their friends visit a comedy club one night where the main attraction is a hypnotist with a dirty mind. Before long, they’ve all lost control of themselves, and are compelled to put on an x-rated exhibition for the crowd.

Michael's Review:
If you’re into humiliation, exhibitionism, and loss of control, this short piece should be right up your alley. The sex here is fairly light, with the story focusing mainly on Tiffany repeatedly finding herself in one embarrassing situation after another, being forced to orgasm on command and run around naked. The writing is clean with a minimum of errors, and things move along at a brisk clip.

Interview with Megan Wyndham:
What makes your book so different from all the books out there? 
There just aren't that many books that go into the idea of: "What would happen if a risque hypnotist let out ALL the stops and the participants had every sexual inhibition lifted..?"

I know I've had that fantasy ever since I first saw a black and white show on TV that showed a married couple getting hypnotized on stage...

What made you want to write erotica?
It's so easy and natural. With literature.. well, everyone knows there's no market for literature. With genre fiction, particularly sci-fi and fantasy, you have to create entire worlds. But with erotica, you can just get right into the crafting of a story that hopefully connects with people on a physical and emotional level.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?
All the time! That's when I backup and try to figure out why I'm stuck and what got me to the place that I need to fix. Normally a story flows with a certain vision and if that stops then I need to find out where the story got off track.

What was the best writing advice that someone has ever given to you?
Elaborate! I have a tendency to focus too much on what is done and what is said and not enough on what the world around the characters is doing.

Is there a genre you could never write? Which and why?
Sure -horror. Because scary things scare the hell out of me! ;)

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration for your writing?
In erotica, it's from the world around me. So far, I haven't really gone into any type of the "non-mainstream" erotica, like sasquatch sex and the like. ;) Sometimes, just the picture of a guy and a girl in a sensual pose can give me an idea on their entire story.

How did you come up with your title?
It often takes a lot of work to come up with a good title. Unlike the cliche, people DO judge books by their covers. A bad title can kill a book.I wanted to get across the idea that though Tiffany went to the comedy club to be entertained - she in fact, became, not only the entertainment, but the high light of the entire show. Thus - ""The Main Attraction"". I had thought of ""The Main Event"" but the sound of that wrestling announcers voice kept going through my head. ;)

What is your favorite thing about being an Indie writer?
Freedom. The speed at which I can get the finished product in front of readers. The control over the direction of the story and plot and seeing my vision to completion.

Do you work with an outline, or just write?
An outline. I've tried to wing it, and it can work for a one-off short story, but fact is, if you want to go into longer pursuits, if you don't have an idea of what you're writing towards, you never get there. It'd be like leaving your house to go on vacation, yet, not knowing how long you're leaving for, so you don't pack anything, and you don't know where you're going, so you don't know if you need a swimming suit or snow skis, and finally, you don't know if you need plane tickets or a full-tank of gas. It'd be insane.

A writer should know the last scene of her book before she starts so that she ensures she gets there. If things change along the way, no worries, but at least it starts getting you in the right direction.

That also goes under the question "best writing advice" too.

How hard was it to come up with characters?
The characters are easy. It's doing mean things to them and then leaving a way for them to escape and save the day/live happily ever after that's hard. ;)

Lust in Japan by Daniel Black

These three stories are united in theme: A young American man goes to Japan and finds a Japanese woman in need of his attentions. The first involves a college student on a summer abroad who finds his host family to be unusually hospitable; in the second, the protagonist rescues a young woman from subway perverts; in the third, an American English teacher takes in a widowed woman and her daughter who have been left homeless by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Michale's Review:
The detail in these stories makes it clear they are in some sense autobiographical. The author clearly spent time in Japan under similar circumstances, and I found them enjoyable that for that reason alone. The sex is well told, and there is some depth to each story, though none are that long. I liked the first story, in which the host father takes the narrator through a variety of establishments in Japan’s sex industry, to be the most interesting. If you’re looking for some short pieces with a different setting than most other erotica, these should fit the bill.

If you thought I meant to dismiss this story with that thin synopsis, think again. Not Yet is one of those rare pieces of erotica, a rather short story that—despite going very light on the setting and characterization—still manages to pack in a ton of heat. There’s not much to say about this other than that the sex is well done and everything else is kept to a bare minimum. The writing is clean, efficient, and does its job with a minimum of fuss. Definitely worth the price of admission.

Author Interview:
Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
No. I have always been an analytical type of person, so when I was growing up my pursuits tended more towards math and science. However, I always loved to read and to write; even if it was writing political essays or history research papers, there was always something I enjoyed about taking my thoughts and bringing them to life for someone else to read. So I probably should have clued in sooner, but I didn’t until the last year or so.

What made you want to write erotica?
I’m a very sexual person and not just within the realm of my own fantasies and turn ons. Human sexuality as a whole has long been fascinating to me, even the things that may not arouse me are still interesting to me. Combine that with having read lots of erotica and my desire to write, erotica was a natural fit. My writing allows me to explore that side of myself in ways I normally wouldn’t be able to.

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration for your writing?
I usually get them while driving, which is a fairly inconvenient time to want to write. But it also makes sense in a way. I’m usually so busy that my mind is going nonstop, but when I am driving, music playing in the background, I can just let my mind wander. And when my mind wanders it doesn’t take it too long to turn to sex. Most of the ideas start out as a general concept or a simple fantasy and build out from there when I get a chance to sit down and write.

Do you work with an outline, or just write?
A bit of both. For shorter stories, such as Sean and Allie’s stories, I will usually just sit down and write it.

I have also written a series of four novella length stories (20-30k words), with three more stories planned so far in the series. These I write in a more structured manner. I still don’t use true outlines, but I do plan ahead. I will start with coming up with the general plot of the story, a broad overview of a few sentences. Then I’ll break down the story into parts or scenes and give each one a brief description of what needs to happen in that scene. Over time, as I let the story build in my mind, I may add in new scenes, take out others, or add notes to a scene about something specific that needs to be included. Then when I have time to write, I pick a scene and write that one part -- just letting that scene flow as I write it. I’ve found that writing like this is very helpful since it’s not always easy to find time to write. So this way I can just do one or two scenes in a week if that’s all I have time for and keep making progress without feeling like there’s too much left to be done.

Do you write under a pen name?
Absolutely. As I said before, writing erotica is as much for me to explore my sexuality as it is to share my stories. As such, I prefer to keep clear boundaries between it and the rest of my life. Though I didn’t start out as Adrian Ward.

When I first started writing, I would share my stories on erotica websites using a basic username, not a true pen name. But after getting a lot of positive feedback and encouragement, I decided to begin publishing and went with a variant of John Smith. However, I quickly learned that there were a lot of people publishing under names like J. Smith and more specifically J. D. Smith. In fact there was already someone publishing erotica as J. D. Smith. So then I had to go through the process of changing my pen name on the few stories that I had published so far. Not all retailers are as quick to update though, so for a while some sites had my books listed under Adrian Ward, others listed the author as J. D. Smith, and others would list Adrian Ward as the author but didn’t update the book cover so it still showed J. D. Smith as the author. It was a pain but I’m glad I got it over with early on.

Your thoughts on receiving book reviews - the good and the bad - 
The most obvious good is getting your stories out there for more people to see, so that more people are interested in what you have written. But I also look forward to an honest review because it’s nice to know what someone thinks of your work. Reviews and stars on retailer websites are nice, but generally short on feedback. Reviews that go a bit more in depth help you understand more about how readers interpret your writing. I already know what the story should look like in my own imagination, but did my readers envision my characters the way I intended? Did the plot make sense? Along with getting a better idea of how your readers are interpreting your writing, I also think constructive criticism is important for growing and being a better writer.

As for the bad, I think all authors are worried about getting a bad review. But accepting the reality that not everyone will like what you write is part of publishing stories for the whole world to see. I think that’s especially true with erotica. Human sexuality is so varied and complex that what is an amazing, sexy story to one person may be boring or horrid to another. So beyond getting a bad review, I think what would be truly bad is a review that turns away readers who would actually enjoy what your story has to offer, even if the reviewer isn’t one of those people.

What is the hardest and easiest part about being an erotica writer?
For me, the hardest part is simply finding the time to write. As much as I enjoy writing, my life is pretty hectic. There are some weeks where I can work on writing, editing, or publishing everyday. And other weeks where I don’t get time for any of it. It can be frustrating, but its just the way things go sometimes.

The easiest part for me is coming up with ideas. I get ideas for stories faster than I can write them. Though part of that may stem from what is the hardest part for me. If I had more time to write, I may find that I have trouble coming up with good ideas to fill that time.

What is your favorite part of being an author?
I just enjoy exploring a story in my mind and then putting that story into words to share with other people. Even if my writing doesn’t go far at a professional level, just being able to share those stories with others will keep me writing.

Do you have a day job as well?
Yes, one that I happen to enjoy, fortunately enough. It is very analytical though, so it’s nice to have writing as a creative balance to my day job.

What is your favorite thing about being an Indie writer?
Control. I like being in full control of my stories, when and what I write, how and where they are published -- all of it. I can see how a publisher might make it easier to market your books as a new author, but from what I understand its still far from easy starting out even with the backing of a publisher. I think it’s great that self-publishing has really opened the world up for Indie authors.

The set-up to this story is one that could easily have been taken too far—the now-legendary MPF included performances by The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, and Simon & Garfunkel, to name just a few of the star-studded list—but thankfully the author doesn’t overplay his hand. We get to the sex pretty quickly, and it’s not just a parade of connections—there is some depth to it and some nice twists at the end that put a satisfying spin on the story. If I have a criticism, it’s that the perspectives shift around a bit too fast, in places disrupting the rhythm. But this is only a minor quibble on a well-done piece.

I need to stress here that this short story is my first foray into Bigfoot erotica. I have not read any of the classics of the genre by Virginia Wade et al. So I can’t say how this might compare. But I found it to be well-written and enjoyable, if a bit shorter than I would have liked (the ending sets Natalia and Oskana up for a lot more fun that we get to witness). Monsterotica isn’t for everyone, but this is worth a look if you’re into it.

This is a story that reminded me a lot of Twilight, and you’ll have to decide for yourself if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. It’s well written for the most part, though it could have used the attention of a beta reader or two. The characters were interesting and engaging once things got going, and the author clearly put some thought into the backstory of Russell and his family. This is the first part in a series, and I hope the author continues it.

Michael's Review:
If it’s not clear from the synopsis, this is not for everyone. Back when I was writing erotica on the Usenet in the late 1990s, stories like this wouldn’t have raised any eyebrows. Now, with erotica having gone mainstream and having to hew to Amazon et al’s sensibilities, authors of this sort of stuff have to find ways to follow the letter of the law while staying true to the spirit of what they want to write. I could sense some of the different ways the author might have taken this story back in the old days. That being said, this is still a hot, intense piece that rips from one encounter to the next. It’s well written enough that I was able to focus on the sex without being distracted by the writing, and I mean that as a compliment. If the synopsis sounds like your kind of thing, you should enjoy this one.

Tamed: The Erotic Writings of Master William Shakespeare by Miranda Tempesta

This is an erotic retelling of Shakespeare’s classic comedy The Taming of the Shrew. A familiarity with that work is probably essential for fully appreciating this one, and if you haven’t read or seen a performance of it yourself, I won’t give any spoilers here. Very roughly, the play recounts the story of two sisters, the older, sharp-tongued Kate (the titular shrew) and her beautiful younger sister Bianca. Bianca has many suitors, but their father will not allow her to wed until her sister does. Yet Kate’s foul personality seems to render her chances of marriage at close to nil. In an effort to free Bianca for wooing, her suitors conspire to get Kate married off, and recruit the clever Petruchio (Philip, here) for the task. Much hilarity then ensues.

Michael's Review:
The Bard’s works have provided a rich well of inspiration for other authors for more than 400 years, and Shrew in particular has been adapted so many times for stage, screen, and other media that compiling a full list is probably impossible. This work is a worthy effort that, thankfully, never takes itself too seriously. Though a somewhat loose adaptation, the author remains true—for the most part—to the wit and spirit of the original while still infusing it with substantial eroticism. This Bianca is an oversexed tart in need of firm discipline, while this Kate is a bookish hellion who is ultimately tamed less by her suitor's wit than by his hand across her backside.

All in all, a lovely work. Bonus points for using “recondite” in a piece of erotica.

Michael's Review:
This is only part 1 of a longer work, but it’s a good start. The writing is good (though it could have used a bit more editing) and the characters are engaging.The central mystery of what lies behind the school and the girls’ powers drew me in and kept me reading. I’m intrigued enough to want to read the next installment in the series, and unless TG stuff turns you off, my guess is you will be too. (One note: This isn’t erotica unless you count the TG elements alone as enough for the genre as Amazon apparently does. There is nothing sexual in this book except when Jennifer and Courtney must explore their curiously shared future memories as husband and wife, but this is handled in a non-explicit fashion—which is appropriate given that all of them are teenagers.)

Michael's Synopsis:
Rachel’s story is a fairly familiar one in erotica: Trapped in a loveless marriage with a boorish, boring man she no longer cares about, she falls for a handsome stranger who whisks her off into a whirlwind of sex and excitement. The story opens with her already on the loose but unsure of what she’s gotten herself into. For the man she initially falls for, Stefan, has some unexplained connection with another man, Albert, who may or may not be a gangster. Through the book, Rachel bounces between these two men and her estranged husband trying to decide what it is she really wants.

Michael's Review:
This is one of those stories you will either love or hate depending on your reaction to Rachel. Good Pussy Bad Pussy is the sort of raw narrative that pours out of the main character’s head in an unfiltered torrent of emotions and self-reflection (the title refers to her inability to control her sex drive). Since Rachel has no clue what she’s doing with her life, neither do we. If you can hang on for the ride, and don’t find yourself hating Rachel’s indecision and sometimes ill-advised choices (I wavered over this in spots), it’s an enjoyable read. The sex is hot, but it does get a bit rough at times and certainly doesn’t fit the usual romantic tropes. You’ll probably know within the first chapter whether you want to keep going; I did.
